An Artist Residency in Motherhood
Last week I started "An Artist Residency in Motherhood", an artist residency that is designed for artists who are also mothers. In the words of its founding artist, "its a reframing of parenthood as a valuable site for creative practice, rather than an obstruction to be overcome". I was excited when I learned of this residency, as residencies are not usually kid/family friendly. And even if they were, it would pose some challenges to uproot an entire family for a length of time. An Artist Residency in Motherhood takes place in my own home and in my everyday life. It's an embracing and savoring of this season of life with young children and letting it fuel my work, both in process and content. I plan to be in residency for 6 months, although it can be extended, and I have set certain parameters for myself. I have a certain number of hours of studio time a week I have committed to, but I am giving myself much needed flexibility on how those hours are met. I am currently home full time with my two young children and therefore completely immersed in this residency environment. I plan on sharing my process and thoughts from residency here on my blog for those who wish to follow along. For now, I am continuing my work as "normal", but letting this inform and hopefully take my work somewhere new. I'll keep you posted! Thanks for following along this journey with me.
